What is Coaching?

Never got coached before and wondering what coaching is? No worries!

According to International Coaching Federation, Coaching is: “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.”

Simply put, a coach…

  • sees coachee as a whole person with all wisdom, NOT as someone that “needs fixing”
  • partners with coachee to design paths, actions, and practices toward desired outcome
  • holds the coachee accountable to bring in goals / topics to bring in, to choose actions and inactions, carry out practices to learn and grow

Coaching isn’t…

  • Venting, where ventee (?) complains and whines about some other events, matters and people with anger, cynicism and glee (oh don’t we love it sometimes)
  • Mentoring, where mentor provides tips and advice based on mentor’s experience
  • Training, where trainer provides knowledge based on given materials
  • Consulting, where consultant provides proposals and solutions
  • Counselling or therapy, where therapist provides healing for the past or current
  • Medicine, where doctor provides diagnosis and medical treatment

Approach to Coaching 1-on-1

Where have you been? Where are you at? Where do you want to go? Where do you want to end up being? 

It’s your journey, of ever-becoming. 

The world as you see it – the question maybe, who are you and who do you want to be in it?

Your truths, beliefs and stories. Are they helping you along the journey you wanted to take – or not really?

Let’s create awareness and design paths with intention! The triangle behind the “who” – body, emotions and language.

Approach to Coaching a Group

Couple, family or work team – it is a group that together defines who they are, what they do, where they’re headed. 

In group coaching, challenges and goals may be varied. A few examples may be:

  • Becoming a people leader for the first time
  • Communicating and collaborating better
  • Resolving conflicts, managing strained relations
  • Leading big changes 

I’d mix assessment of shared context, individuals and group dynamics so that we can establish actions and practices that bring value to the whole.
